What Is The Rougarou?
The Rougarou is a famous Cajun swamp monster that is said to live in the bayous and swamps of Louisiana.
The name “Rougarou” comes from the word “Loup-garou” where “Loup” means wolf and “Garou” means someone who can shapeshift. So in essence it means “werewolf”. Over time the word Loup-garou changed into what we know today as Rougarou.
Stories about the Rougarou first emerged in Louisiana when French settlers moved into the area in the 18th century.
What Does The Rougarou Look Like?
The Rougarou is described as a human-wolf hybrid with characteristics of both a human and a wolf.
It is said to have a human body with a wolf-like face and features with eyes that glow in the dark and dark fur. It is however bigger and stronger than an average human especially when it shape shifts into its werewolf form.
Just like most werewolf legends, it is said that it can shift into its werewolf form during the full moon.
Legends around the Rougarou say that it preys on people who break Cajun cultural traditions or take part in sinful behavior. It then follows that you are able to protect yourself by behaving morally and adhering to Catholic customs and practices.
Rougarou Sightings
Despite many believing that the Rougarou does not exist and that it is simply a mythical folklore creature, there are many people who claim to have seen the swamp monster in the Acadiana region with some even reporting seeing shortly before and after Hurricane Katrina.
But don’t take my word for it, here is a video detailing stories told by local law enforcement about the calls they receive from residents who believe that they have seen this fearsome swamp monster.
How Do You Pronounce Rougarou?
The word “rougarou” is pronounced roo-gah-roo.
